Chapter 7

Anno left the next morning as did everyone’s comfort with me. Don’t get me wrong, every 1 knew I was a butcher with a machete, but no 1 knew just how far I could go. Honestly, that wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg.

Our numbers of citizens started to spike around the beginning of January and continued to rise the whole month. Also, the tunnel homeroom finally finished digging the tunnel. I told them it was fine to leave it like it was but they insisted that they wanted to properly seal the tunnel with concrete and plaster. They only had the very little amount that the school maintenance men would have on hand at all times, but since they insisted I allowed them to. I honestly think they liked working together and didn’t want to be separated from each other.

The letter brought a few things with it. 1st, a realization that I was being watched at all times. It was completely unnerving. 2nd, the relief of knowing Mr. Patterson was still alive. 3rd that I have to prepare people for something they have absolutely no idea how to fight. But, before I could take action on that part, something else came on the dusk of February 7th.

The last snow to touch the ground was on January 17th.

“What’s the emergency!” I said walking onto the roof of the school.

“This man needs to speak with you,” Peter said. The man was very skinny and had a bloody wrap on his head. He was recently found by Anno and sent here because of injuries.

“What’s the trouble?” I asked.

“I’m a meteorologist, or at least I was. Anyway, I was 1 of the lead scientists and 1 of the 1st to spot, by eye, super storm Zackary that devastated Maine,” he said.

“Are you trying to tell me there is going to be a hurricane?” I asked bluntly.

“By the way these winds are and the cloud formations that are forming and the smell in the air, yes,” he said.

“How long until this storm hits us?” I asked.

“It could be as little as 2 hours,” he said.

“Now, if I rustle everyone and there is no storm…”

“Trust me, it’s gunna be worse than Sandy,” he said.

“Thank you.” I said to the man. I ran back inside.

I ran to the main office and announced for all homeroom leaders to come to the lobby that instant.

“There is a terrible hurricane coming very quickly, I want all of your citizens to move their cots into the hallways as close the wall as you can squeeze them. Then, once they are situated, tape the windows so that they don’t break. Then lock the door and tape the window on the door. If there is still time before the storm hits, run into other classrooms and tape the windows. If you can spare a few people, tell them to come down the food store room and help move all the food,” I said to all of them. Once they dispersed, I ran down to the tunnel.
